The base of my work are installations pieces using ground soil as a material, most commonly implementing ink, traditional tosa paper, and soil from local kochi mountains. This most recent piece was composed using a new material that I regularly drink- coffee.
I first dyed the traditional Japanese “washi” paper with coffee, then coating on a layer of water mixed soil. Finally, I have used a blend of coffee and ink to paint the design in a calligraphy brush style.
Coffee is a necessity in my everyday life. The calmness I feel when I brew my coffee is a freedom from obstructive thoughts. It is the same feeling I sense in the process of creating works. For this piece, I set out to express this commonality in a natural way.
