『竹林寺・心の波紋』
五重塔が再建された落慶式の日のこと。
母に連れられ当時3歳の私は、厳かで緊張感のある空気に、蓮の花びらをかたどった黄金色の散華が塔の上から惜しみなく降り注いだ情景を見て、その夜なかなか眠る事が出来なかった。今もその事は、はっきりと覚えている。
その日から約20年が経過し、2001年ここ竹林寺で行われたあるイベントにスタッフとして参加した事をきっかけに海老塚住職を始め、寺僧の方々その他大勢の人々と知り合うことが出来た。またその時、出会った人たちから感じたこと、それは人の心を照らす温かい言葉や思いやりの姿勢で、その後もこの事は私の心に深く溶け込み広がっていった。

ここはお遍路さんたちが巡礼し、またご本尊文殊菩薩を信仰する人たちなどで年中人の絶えることがない場所でもある。何時の頃からか竹林寺さんの一角をお借りして私のつたない作品ではあるけれど、この場所にて作品を発表することは出来ないかと思いを寄せるようになった。

・・・そこに1つの波紋が
広がり つながり (縁) として
存在できたなら・・・と
今回の展示は私にとって初個展でもあり、竹林寺・金色院としても新しい試みになる。開催までにはあらゆる面で多くの人の力を分けてもらい『竹林寺・心の波紋』という一つの形を育てていく事が出来たように思う。最後に、この企画に携わって頂いた多くの人々、関係者ならびに皆様へ心より厚くお礼を申し上げます。

Chikurinji – Swells of the Spirit
I was three years old when my mother took me to celebrate the rebuilding of the five-story pagoda. Looking up through that ceremonious air of tension, I marveled at the descending rooftops. The lotus pedal shapes seemed to fall like golden leaves scattering. The image left me with little sleep that night, and I remember it with a distinct clarity even now. Fast-forward twenty years to 2001 and I began working as a volunteer staff member for various events at the temple. Since then, I have had the wonderful opportunity to make acquaintances with an incredible amount of people, including the various monks and even chief priest Ebitsuka. The things I’ve felt when meeting those people- their warm words and kindheartedness, have made a deep impact and resonation in my soul.

Chikurin temple is visited all year round by tourists and followers of Buddhism for its beauty and being an important stop on the religious pilgrimage. It was a privilege for me to use a space at the temple to exhibit my artwork. Please allow me to present that work here.
“The Garden’s Pond” from the Analects of Musou
Within the spacious grounds of the garden
A bulky and massive structure
The people and pilgrims come and go
It boasts a magnificence,
A pinnacle of Tosa
The Chikurin temple of Godaisan
It is my hope and suggestion that such a place is the medium for the formation of relationships- bonds that surface as a ripple, like small waves that swell, expanding and deepening further relationships which connect us with more and more people.
This exhibition was both my first solo showcase and a new endeavor for the temple. I believe I was able to fully develop this work, “Chikurinji- Ripples of the Heart”, through the efforts of many people and I’d like to thank from the bottom of my heart all of those involved in making the project a reality.
